A caring federation
helping our fellow traders
honours & awards
THE John Carter/Harry Cross
Memorial Cup, pictured here, is presented annually at conference to
the person felt to have done the most for market
traders beyond the normal call of duty.
Originally named the John Carter Cup in memory of the well-known pitcher, it was re-
named following the death of Past President Harry Cross
(below) in 1995.
Other awards made at
conference are the George Bailey Shield for the branch
making the most new members in a year; the Cyril
Rees Trophy for the branch with the largest increase in membership; and the
George Randle Trophy for the best maiden speech at conference.
From time to time conference also votes to accept an honorary life member.
In centenary year there were 10: Alf Pether, the late Hampton Flint, Harold Evans DFC, Bill Knowles, Bert Perkins, Jos Harris, Richard J Earley, Harry Nathan, Dennis Williams and Bill Smith.
Above: The Rev Shirley Vetters, NMTF Chaplain, with the remembrance book. Below left: Professor Norma Raynes, tutor Dr Penny Francks, first grant winner Rebecca Zeffert, and Dennis Williams, chairman of the NMTF Benevolent Fund Committee. Below right: Harry Cross.
THE Benevolent Fund, set up 56 years ago during the second world war, has helped many people in times of need.
The fund is there for the benefit of all who genuinely need it.
Under the federation’s rules grants of assistance are made at the discretion of the Benevolent Fund Committee. They may take the form of gifts or loans, and of lump sum or periodical payments.
The Benevolent Fund also looks after the federation’s Book of Remembrance, housed in a lectern at head office and opened on the anniversary of recorded deaths. Relatives or friends are welcome to visit to mark the anniversaries.
The NMTF/Harry Cross Student Grant, established in 1996 under the auspices of the Benevolent Fund Committee, is awarded annually to further the studies of a student whose parents or parent are market traders.
It is paid out of the interest from a fund set up with £500 each from the NMTF’s Benevolent Fund; Harry’s daughter, Professor Norma Raynes; his son, Dr Tony Raynes; and boosted by donations from Stockport and Fairs branches.
