The scheme also includes new council offices, restaurants and an anchor Cineworld complex.
The new-build temporary market — described by traders as the best temporary market they have ever seen — has opened as a trampoline and bowling complex.
“It was a huge project and, as you would expect, there have been plenty of challenges along the way,” Andy said.
The traders faced a rigorous process to secure a place in the temporary market, which took into account everything from their business plan to rent arrears. In the end around 60 per cent of the traders made the move and the new temporary market was a success from opening day in September 2017.
The bright new temporary market, where a new food court was soon pulling in the crowds, was a foretaste of what was to come.
But there were still a few challenges in the pipeline. The timeline for the opening of the new market slipped a few months, then the pandemic hit.
Gary Jaques, the NMTF’s Warrington liaison officer who runs So Many Lovely Things, a gifts business, takes up the story.
“I started my business in the old market with a view to the future and moving to the new market,” he said. “Moving to the temporary market helped a lot, and since the new market opened in July my monthly takings have doubled.”
The spacious, airy design, with a food court branded The Cookhouse at Warrington Market opening on to Time Square at one end, an escalator leading to a mezzanine floor, and basement storage, helped deliver the goods.
But Gary says partnership working between the traders and the management has steered the project through difficult times.
“It really helps to have an NMTF group,” he said. “After the pandemic hit most traders closed their business in the temporary market, with seven or eight essential food businesses continuing with strict COVID-19 measures in force.”
Andy Ward, the market manager, masterminded the development and move into the new market
Gary Jaques, who runs So Many Lovely Things, a gifts and home fragrance stall and is the NMTF liaison officer for Warrington, said the traders and management had worked together seamlessly to get the new market off to a flying start
