14 MARKET TIMES • OCTOBER 2019 Fears allayed over fate of key
stalls at York’s Shambles Market
 ... for the time being

FEARS that 24 stalls at the entrance to York’s Shambles Market could be removed by Christmas have been allayed – but the traders involved are still worried about their long-term future.
York’s historic market received a £1.6 million cash injection five years ago when the stalls were refurbished and a new food courtyard with seven kiosks and seating was created.
Around that time Make It York, a company wholly owned by York City Council, took over responsibility for markets, tourism, events and science, with the aim of sharing resources and developing an integrated marketing strategy for the city’s key assets.
The investment and name change from Newgate Market to The Shambles Market were welcomed by traders who were cautiously optimistic about the future.
But they were taken aback by recent suggestions that 24 key stalls in Jubbergate, the only prominent entrance to the market, could be removed before Christmas.
They aired their concerns at a City of York Council meeting when Rupert Harrison, who runs Black Yak, an ethnic clothes stall in Jubbergate, said they had been repeatedly told by Make It York that the 24 stalls could be cleared out.
