REPORT
Sherman and Waterman stepped into the breach and ran it as a retail market until 1985. The company, which specialises in antique and collectible markets, continues to run the Monday market under a separate agreement with the landlord.
The restored Jubilee Market was officially reopened with much fanfare by Her Majesty the Queen in August 1987.
“Now the challenge is to move things forward and build a brand which will enable the market to reach its full potential,” Stewart said.
In 1985 the Greater London Council came up with an idea to close the market and create a Jewish museum in its place.
Hence the right royal extravaganza recently to mark the 30th anniversary of the opening of the restored market, although this time the Queen was a lookalike.
The traders, a significant number of whom are shareholders, are keen for the market to move with the times, but they wouldn’t like to see too many changes.
The traders rallied round and managed to get together enough cash to save their market. It has been trader run ever since.
Stewart took over as chairman of the company in 2013 when the trader shareholders decided to bring in someone with outside business experience. Stewart used to run the UK division of a large Japanese company selling photocopiers.
Rosalyn Betito, who is the eldest daughter of the late Cyril Waterman, has been selling scarves and accessories on the market since her father took it over in 1975.
Stewart said: “Some traders took out mortgages on their homes and others dug deep into their savings.”
“I remember dressing up in Victorian clothes for that opening all those years ago,” she said.
A trader called Ray Green took over as chief executive of the trader-owned company and oversaw a major restoration of the building which lasted two years.
Stewart’s role initially was to steady the ship and get everything running on a sound business footing.
“How many businesses can say they have kept going for 30 or 40 years and more? We have weathered recessions and we are still going strong,” she said.
Under his tenure the company has invested £750,000 in new lighting, new signage and a general sprucing up of the market.
Rosalyn met her husband, who is also a trader, on the market.
