The Victorian market hall closed a year ago for the refurbishment, which included a new layout, a new glass atrium to bring light into the building and a new floor. Over those 12 months, the traders have been housed in a temporary market hall to the rear of the building at reduced rents. There were concerns among some traders that the new market hall would not accommodate them all, and each trader was asked to present a business plan outlining what they would be offering customers. Paul Hind, who trades on the outdoor market and is chairman of the NMTF Chesterfield branch, said all the existing traders had been offered space in the new-look market hall and he described it as a very satisfactory outcome. In addition, six new traders have been offered space in the building. Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said the council invested in the market in difficult economic times because it recognised how important it was to the town’s economy. Dominic Stevens, manager of Destination Chesterfield, said he was delighted to see the existing traders returning to the market hall. £2.1 million of the funding came from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and from the National Lottery, with the remainder from Chesterfield Council. BRIGHOUSE played host to the town’s second Totally Locally Summer Market, establishing the event as one of the largest local produce markets in Yorkshire. Started last year with 25 stalls, the market returned this summer with more than 80 stalls crammed with locally produced foods and crafts. John Buxton, one of the organisers, said: “It’s wonderful to see how far we’ve come. Visitors have really embraced the market and it’s been amazing to discover all the small local producers that are right on our doorstep.” An estimated 15,000 visitors from across the North of England attended the market, which expanded across the town centre into King Street and Bradford Road. Attractions included delicious street food, Yorkshire ice cream, a wide range of locally produced food and drinks and an array of local crafts.
