And traders like Andrew Johnson, who has a niche market business selling vacuum parts and offering a repair service for Dysons and Hoovers, said: “I traded here last summer and this summer — what a difference between the two.”
Ian Ault, chairman of the social enterprise company, is full of praise for Emyr and all that has been achieved on Llangefni market.
“It was a long process to get where we are, but as a social enterprise we can apply for grants.”
Last week Ian heard that the company had been awarded a grant for £80,000 that will pay for an events manager and a town centre manager for two years.
“Before that we got a grant for £18,000, which helped pay for stalls and tables and
advertisements,” he said.
“With the new grant we will be able to build
on the different specialist events that will bring more and more people to the town and the market.”
One challenge now is to improve Saturday market days, which are much quieter than Thursdays.
The enterprise company has already had success with leaflet drops at caravan sites, which are bringing more tourists into Llangefni on summer market days.
Events including a carnival, a scarecrow festival, Christmas fairs and activities drawing in local schools are all helping to boost the town and the market.
There will still be plenty of obstacles and difficult market days, but everyone now believes that the market is on the right road to recovery.
