THE Making Markets Matter campaign 2013, spearheaded by the National Market Traders Federation, reached new heights this summer — with the help of a lot of sunshine and market operators who really entered into the spirit of the promotion.
MMM, with its Voucher Vault, Find the Fruit competition, Play Your Cards Right, master chef demonstrations, face painting — and lots more (including our Victor the Lion mascot) — once again proved to be a successful formula to promote to the public the delights of shopping on markets.
Events were held at Northallerton in North Yorkshire, Swadlincote in Derbyshire, and Dewsbury and Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, both operated by Kirklees Council.
The campaign, which has been running and developed since 2006, is heavily subsidised by the NMTF, since the federation is committed to doing all it can to promote the industry.
Over the years MMM has received praise from operators for its effectiveness and the efficiency of its team.
This year Chris Cotton, Kirklees Market Manager, said: “The Making Markets Matter event brought lots of activity to the market. The design and layout of the event attracted town centre shoppers into the market area, and encouraged them to wander through the aisles, exploring the market and visiting the stalls. The various elements of the event ensured there was something for everyone to enjoy.”
And the council’s Business and Development Manager Maria Cotton said: “It was a pleasure to work with the NMTF on the Making Markets Matter events. They were very professional, organised and kept us fully involved in the event planning. On the day the team were fantastic, engaging with the stallholders and shoppers in the market and town centre. We will definitely be booking more of these in the future.”
