Pagwan Singh, Jimmy’s son, and his wife Rajwant Kaur are pictured with their catering van. They have traded at Northallerton from since 2018 selling the Punjabi specialities that Rajwant cooks up
and long-serving traders and businesses. New recruits include Jimmy’s son, Pagwan Singh, and is wife Rajwant, who have a catering van selling authentic hot
Indian food inspired by the Punjab where Rajwant was born.
“We started here in 2018 and were doing really well before the pandemic, and hopefully things will improve next year,” he said.
And Laurent Allimant, The French Cheese Man, says business is booming for the French cheese and charcuterie he imports from his home city of Lyon and from the Alps.
Laurent sold cheese in Lyon for seven years after he left school, before working in industry and in a taxi business where he met his British partner who was working for a chemical company in the city.
“She was promoted so we moved to North Yorkshire and I decided to go back to my love of French cheese,” he said.
It seems the people of Northallerton have discovered a liking for his high-quality French produce and his business is booming.
With such a good mix of top traders like
Laurent, the market is rapidly making a name for itself, according to Jimmy.
“Wednesday is a busy market mainly for locals but on Saturdays we get people from quite far afield,” he said.
Everyone is positive about the future. And it is hoped that the £17 million Treadmills development will bring more footfall to the town.
The scheme involves the development of the site of the prison which closed seven years ago as a retail, leisure and business destination.
The first phase, which includes a Lidl supermarket and Iceland store, has been completed and work is due to begin early in 2021 on the next phase which will include improvements to the Main Street.
This will bring some disruption to the market but Jimmy says it will continue to trade and hopefully the new facilities will create more reasons for new people to visit Northallerton and discover the new “Queen of the North”.
