Daniel Brobbery-Gray has new hope after being taken on as an apprentice fishmonger at Arndale market in Manchester
investing in its markets and its young people. This is a proactive move by market traders in partnership with Manchester City Council to train the business owners of the future.
“I’d say this to all school leavers out there wondering what to do next: try your hand on a market stall. If you have the passion to deliver great product and services, love the feeling of making customers happy and enjoy the buzz of a busy market hall — then the NMTF Retail Apprenticeship Scheme is for you. It’s the first step on the road to being your own boss.”
Angela Lofters, Skills Shop Co-ordinator at The Manchester College, said: “The NMTF RAS scheme gives young people the chance to receive on-the job training as they develop their career in market trading.
“Before the apprentices start their placement, they have two weeks at the Manchester Skills Shop to learn the basics and build their confidence. Additional support is provided once the placement has started.”
She said the programme was of immense benefit to participating market traders as it gives them an extra pair of hands and a bespoke training framework. They get a cost-free recruitment service, which matches them with a suitable apprentice.
Crucially, each apprentice is employed by the Retail Apprenticeship Training Agency (RATA), which manages the scheme, reducing the risk, cost, time and administration for market traders.
