NEWS
THE NMTF is going back to its roots for its 2018 AGM and Conference.
For the organisation is pitching up in the market city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, where it all began 118 years ago.
And for the first time NMTF members, groups, market operators and anyone interested in the retail markets industry can see the costs and book online — go to www.nmtf.co.uk/conference2018.
The annual general meeting on the morning of Monday, April 16 at the city’s Novotel will be strictly for members only.
But after the formalities are over, the conference that follows will be thrown open to all who want to attend — not just members but market operators, market managers and anyone else who has an interest in the UK’s retail markets industry.
is welcome to attend as a day delegate (free to NMTF members, £75 to others), but we hope most of you will spend the Monday evening with us and join in the fun at the President’s Dinner.
from the event — plus an overnight stay on the Monday night.
We’re planning a line-up of speakers we anticipate will bring some thought-provoking ideas with them.
The format is still being finalised but it promises to be both interesting and entertaining, and will provide a rare opportunity for traders and operators to get together to talk about the future of the industry.
And it will all end in an hour-long debate on how we see the future of the industry, looking at the latest trends and trying to find out just how long-lasting these might be.
Why Sheffield? Aside from its excellent location and public transport links to the rest of the UK, Sheffielders love a market.
The Novotel is a convenient two-minutes walk from Sheffield Midland Station and backs on to the award-winning St. Paul’s Square and Peace Gardens.
Of course that won’t really be the end. Anyone
The city has a huge diversity of markets, festivals and fairs happening throughout the year. The cherry on the cake is that the NMTF was founded in Sheffield in 1899, a stone’s throw from the Novotel.

Nominations are invited for the NMTF annual awards
NOMINATIONS are invited for the NMTF’s annual awards — the John Carter/Harry Cross Memorial Cup, the Market Manager of the Year, and the NMTF/Harry Cross Student Grant.
So do you know an officer who goes that extra mile, perhaps beyond the call of duty?
The memorial cup will go to anyone judged to have done the most for market traders over and above the normal call of duty. Anyone involved in the markets industry can be nominated (with the exception of Executive Board members).
If so, all you have to do is tell us, in no more than 200 words, why you think that person deserves the award.
If you know someone you believe is worthy of the honour, send details, including a brief summary of what he or she has done, to the NMTF at Hampton House to arrive no later than March 2nd 2018.
Please do not forget to include your name, the nominee’s name and title, the market on which he or she works and your contact details.
The Dennis Williams Memorial Trophy for Market Manager of the year is named after an NMTF Past President and Honorary Life Member who died in November 2009.
The 2018 NMTF/Harry Cross Student Grant is available to the son or daughter of a member of the NMTF who has completed one term or semester at a British University.
Officers nominated need not be the market manager — superintendents, supervisors, inspectors — indeed anyone in a day-to-day managerial role can be nominated.
While the grant is not large it is sufficient to purchase books or equipment.
Entries can be sent via email to publicity@nmtf.co.uk or by post to the Publicity Department, NMTF, Hampton House, Hawshaw Lane, Hoyland, Barnsley, S74 0HA.
The deadline is March 2nd 2018.
The closing date for applications is March 24th2018.
