It was once important for cotton mills, but now attracts tourists including walkers, cyclists and day trippers.

Traders are naturally pleased about the investment, which will include new green-and- white striped gazebos and canopies.
“The chemical content was quite shocking, so I decided to experiment and make my own chemical-free products,” Janis said.
Although new sweet traders Rob and Paula Hoather aren’t keen on the idea of new gazebos. “We have been trading here since July and it’s a brilliant market,” said Rob. “We have started selling old-fashioned sweets and we do well in tourist spots — plus here there are a lot of local market shoppers.”
Mother and daughter, who also sell online, have a loyal following for Janis’ eczema cream. “I can’t make enough of it,” she said.
The market team is doing all it can to help traders and the good news is that they are set to receive a cash windfall from Craven District Council to boost the economic vibrancy of Settle.
But they love their pink and white gazebo and would be reluctant to change.
