Market Times • December 2016 NEWS NMTF President celebrates 50 years on Beverley Market NMTF Field Support Officer Brendan Dyson is the latest member of its staff to be awarded NABMA’s Diploma in Market Administration. Along with other successful candidates Brendan received his certificate at NABMA’s annual conference. The scheme, run in conjunction with the Institute of Place Management, is available to market officers and those associated staff in allied organisations who would benefit from involvement in high quality markets training courses. For more information go to: www.nabma.com/our-work/training/ 29 NMTF President John Dyson first got a taste for market trading as a 10-year-old when he helped out on a family friend’s sweet stall on the market which used to trade on the site of Derby’s Eagle Market. There was something about the banter and friendliness he liked so much that he decided to make a living from markets. And 50 years after he first set up stall on Beverley Market, John has no plans to throw in the towel any time soon. John said: “I was a big lad at 10 and I used to hand out the sweets to the customers while the trader did the pitching.” After leaving school he got a “proper job” and began working in a cinema, but market trading had him hooked. “There was a bloke at the cinema selling stockings to the usherettes and when I moved to another cinema he suggested I started selling them there,” John said. On his day off John started selling stockings on the market and in no time he was a full-time market trader standing markets including Burton-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme. When he moved up to East Yorkshire and met his wife, Pearl, who was head waitress at the Kings Head in Beverley, he decided to give Beverley market a go — and he hasn’t looked back. John said: “Beverley market is unusual in that it has tripled in size since I started on it in September 1966. It used to be 50 or so stalls in the main market place and it grew to around 150 at its peak, with stalls going up the street and a new market area opening in Wednesday Market.” At the time he was doing well selling stockings, but struggled to get a permanent pitch because Beverley had a waiting list. “On my first day on the market I asked Malcolm Pattison if I could leave my case full of stockings under his fruit and veg stall, and we were friends for nearly 50 years.” Sadly Malcolm, one of the great market characters, died earlier this year. “I did get a permanent spot after pestering the manager so much he gave me one,” said John. And he has been a stalwart of the market, selling socks, tights, underwear and insoles, ever since. “I still sell stockings which is NMTF President John Dyson pictured with NMTF President-Elect Michael Nicholson quite a popular line again,” John said. John has been a stalwart of the NMTF Beverley branch, now a group, and he has been part of the trader-operated Cottingham Market near Hull for the past two decades, as well as standing Pocklington Market. He has served on the NMTF National Executive Board for a number of years before being elected President-Elect and taking over as National President this year. For John, it is all about helping your fellow traders and making a contribution to the markets industry, as well as enjoying the hustle and bustle of market life.
