PLANS for a brand new food market in Bradford city centre, which will form part of a £21 million redevelopment, have been given the green light.
And it’s not a moment too soon for the food traders who are struggling with ever decreasing footfall in the city’s Oastler market.
The scheme involves demolishing the former Marks & Spencer building and an adjoining former Woolworths in Darley Street and replacing it with a sparkling new glass building with 22,000 sq ft of retail space and a new square.
Darley Street, always considered the city’s main shopping street, is on a steepish hill, which the architects have used to their advantage to create an upper and lower ground floor which will both have street entrances.
The upper ground floor will be home to a new food and produce market, with the lower ground floor used for storage and services. There will be an impressive central atrium
and escalators leading up to a first- floor food court with a balcony overlooking the newly created square.
This new square will be a great place for people to enjoy a drink, a bite to eat, and for market-type events and entertainment.
The plans by market specialist architects Greig and Stephenson include an impressive glass frontage, plenty of natural light, and environmentally friendly features including solar panels and heating, rainwater harvesting, ventilation and facilities to charge electric vehicles.
Bradford has a rich market heritage going back centuries.
The old Rawson Market specialised in meat. The adjoining James Street was the fish market and Kirkgate Market was once a beautiful Victorian market before the planners, in their wisdom, demolished it to make way for a new shopping centre. The Kirkgate Centre is now home to Kirkgate Market, a non-food enterprise on the first floor.
The Oastler Centre, a ground floor market at the top end of town, is home to food and general traders, but has suffered badly since Morrisons departed. More recently the nearby Boyes store relocated to the Kirkgate Centre.

Initially they were looking to convert the building but it soon became obvious that the best option would be to demolish it and start again.
The plans became more ambitious when it was decided to increase the size of the new market and create a new square.
The new market will have an additional entrance in Piccadilly at the back of the building. The hope is that this will help the regeneration of this street which has impressive Grade II listed buildings and is a short walk to The Broadway Centre.
The council plans to demolish the Oastler Centre and sell it off for private housing, which will bring more people into the city centre.
Colin said: “At the moment the Oastler Centre is out on a limb. The new market will be in the retail centre of Bradford opposite Kirkgate market.”

The issues facing Bradford’s markets are familiar to many towns and cities. A smart new shopping centre, The Broadway, opened at the opposite lower end of the city, shifting the retail heart.
