  Let us eat cake
NMTF members will be aware that the organisation became a not-for- profit limited company on July 1 (see article page 10).
Just three days later the Executive Board met at head office under its new format, and to celebrate staff
joined board members in enjoying a slice of special “limited edition” cake.
National President John Dyson is pictured doing the honours. Next to him is Deputy Projects Manager Rachel Harban, who did the baking.
Brixton Market’s fruit and veg is fit for a princess
HRH Princess Alexandra visited Brixton Market recently to see how it is helping local families eat more healthily through the Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg initiative.
The Rose Vouchers project was set up by the Alexandra Rose Charity in partnership with Food Matters to tackle food poverty and promote healthy eating. The project gives low- income and vulnerable families vouchers to the value of three pounds per child — double if the child is under one — that can be redeemed for fresh fruit and vegetables at their local markets.
The project currently works with seven children’s centres in Lambeth supporting 120 families.
Jonathan Pauling, Chief Executive of Alexandra Rose Charity, said: “All the evidence suggests the first three years of a child’s life are the most important in setting their future life chances. Rose Vouchers give families the financial power in their pockets to give their children the healthiest start in life.”
Princess Alexandra enjoyed a leisurely walk around Brixton Market where many of the vouchers are redeemed. She saw for herself the diverse range of fresh fruit and vegetables on sale from participating market traders, and talked to families about their experiences of shopping at the market.
Stuart Horwood, who represents
NMTF members said: “Brixton street market has been at the heart of this community for almost 150 years – helping local families to access a wide range of healthy and affordable food.
“London’s street markets are well known for their wide range of fresh, value fruit and veg, so it’s great to be part of the Rose Vouchers project — helping a new crop of customers eat more healthily.”
