Chance for traders to wave UK flag at European market in France
NMTF members wanting to fly the UK flag in continental Europe are invited to apply for a pitch at a French European market to be held in October.
And each trader who is selected to take part in the delegation will be given £200 to help towards travel and accommodation costs.
There are special deals with local hotels offering rooms between €56 and €85 per night.
It will be free to stand the market, and stalls will be provided.
The event, from October 22 to 24, will take place in Besançon in the east of France, roughly 450 miles from the Channel Tunnel.
The market will be staged as part of a national conference of local trade, where the theme will be: the attractive role of outdoor markets to revitalise town centres.
The whole show is organised by the local council, in partnership with the Ministry of Economics, the Confederation of French Traders, the National Federation of French Markets, and NMTF sponsors Vitabri (see page 12).
Ideally the successful applicants will be NMTF members who produce their own products or specialities in the UK, with the aim of reflecting British culture.
Some members may want to turn the visit into a holiday — Besançon, close to the Swiss border, has been labelled the first green city of France. Its Vauban citadel has been listed as a

UNESCO World Heritage site.
NMTF Chief Executive Joe Harrison said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our members to taste what market trading is like on the continent.
“Though some years ago now we, have taken part in several European markets and they have all been a success.
Because of the anticipated interest from many European countries the UK delegation can include no more than 10 traders.
You need to submit your application by post or email to the NMTF projects department.
You must include your full name, membership number, address and contact phone number, a brief description of what you sell, and a picture of your stall.
Email to, or post to NMTF Projects, Hampton House, Hawshaw Lane, Hoyland, Barnsley S74 0HA.
Deadline for submitting entries is Friday August 26.
Traders are hoping for record crowds at Bolton Food and Drink Festival
TRADERS who have signed up to stand this year’s Bolton Food and Drink Festival are looking forward to great footfall at the event, which attracts around 200,000 people over August Bank Holiday weekend.
And this year there is a science twist.
Award-winning Mad Science North West will be offering unique, hands-on science workshops.
There will be seven interactive areas: a vortex cannon zone; a slime zone; a kitchen chemistry zone; a sensory zone; a mad lab photo booth, and a fantastic show zone — with mad scientists and lots to entertain children along their journey.
The festival is organised by Bolton Council in association with Aldi. Leader of Bolton Council, Coun Cliff
Morris, said bringing the science zone to the festival this year tied in well with Manchester’s year as European City of Science.
He said: “This year we wanted to do something a bit different which fits in with the science theme.
“Bringing in the dedicated science zone will offer an interactive fun family experience and is guaranteed to captivate children of all ages.
“Together with the mad science zone, we’ve got the perfect formula for a family friendly festival — a mixture of great food and drink, fantastic chefs and entertainment for all of the family.”
