Plastic fiver is on its way
THE new polymer £5 note will be issued on September 13 and, by January, around half the paper £5 notes will have been replaced with the new ones.
The paper £5 note will be withdrawn from circulation in May 2017.
Staff need to be trained to recognise the new notes, and training materials are available free of charge from the Bank of England. For example, there’s a short video that introduces the key features of the new notes in just 90seconds, a smartphone app for both Apple and Android, and a range of posters and leaflets.
With little more than a month to go until the new fiver is issued, now is the time to prepare.
For more information go to www.thenewfiver.co.uk.
As a taster, these are features to look for on the new note:
• Check the see-through window and the clearly defined portrait of the Queen
• Check that the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) is gold on the front and silver on the back
• Check the foil patch changes from “Five” to “Pounds”
• Check the coronation crown appears 3D • Check the ultra-violet feature
The new polymer £5 will be cleaner, safer and stronger than its paper predecessor, says the Bank of England. Its Chief Cashier Victoria Cleland said: “Polymer — incorporating complex windows and sophisticated security features — delivers a leap forward in counterfeit resilience.” For more information visit www.thenewfiver.co.uk

THE NMTF’s brand new app with a host of useful tools is now available for your smartphone.
The free app is designed so that members are able to report incidents that could result in a liability claim.
But it’s also much more.
You can find a market by searching the NMTF’s comprehensive database of locations and operators, both local authority and private.
There’s a section dedicated to what the NMTF offers, including comprehensive liabilities insurance, cover for HMRC investigations, supplier discounts, expert financial and legal advice and retail training.
You can even read editions of Market Times online as an emag, going back as far as June 2011.
You can learn all about the NMTF’s campaigns, ranging from the hugely popular Making Markets Matter initiative and the National Youth Market to two
major joint ventures with the National Association of British Market Authorities — Mission for Markets and Love Your Local Market.
‘Our new app is full of useful services and we hope that traders will be keen to download it for their iPhone or Android and use it regularly to see what’s going on in the NMTF’
- Joe Harrison, NMTF CEO
Traders will also be able to find out which markets, fairs and festivals our national officers will be visiting and contact them directly for advice and support.
They do not have to be members — but if they download the app traders will easily be able to join and renew online.
