Doncaster is cornering the market for fine food fit for the Queen
FORGET Fortnum and Mason and Harrods Food Hall. One of the best places to shop for the finest food these days is Doncaster Market, where a number of traders have recently scooped top national awards and accolades.
Even Her Majesty The Queen is getting a taste for the market fare.
Young entrepreneurs Ryan and Matthew Davis, who are the fourth generation to run the family fruit and veg business, were named Greengrocers of the Year in a national competition.
Angus Butchers on the indoor market picked up a couple of national gold awards for their pork and black pudding sausages and their streaky bacon.
Plane and Armstrong, another butchers, won a national gold at the same event, the 2016 National Meat Products Competition at Birmingham’s NEC, for their black pudding.
And Roger Topping and his son Matthew, who run the Topping Pie Company, recently went to Windsor Castle to deliver one of their famous pies for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.
Weighing 2.2 kilos, the pie featured three layers of pork meat and game.
