Manchester sunshine for third National Youth Market
YOUNG traders aged between 16 and 30 filled Manchester’s prestigious King Street with stalls offering an amazing array of goods and quite a lot of ingenuity.
The third National Youth Market, organised by the NMTF and Manchester Markets, became a two-day event this year.
And while the Friday proved to be rather showery, Saturday was a cracker and footfall was good.
Originally the event was going to be held in St Ann’s Square, but a homeless protest there meant it had to be moved to nearby King Street, where famous name retailers rub shoulders with each
other in rows of high-end shops. NMTF Chief Executive Joe Harrison said the move had
perhaps helped the market. “Certainly there were a lot of people around on the Saturday
because it was such a good day.” A cash prize of £500 was up for grabs and it was down to NMTF President Michael Nicholson and President-Elect John Dyson to
make the decision.
It was difficult because there
were so many enthusiastic traders and some really good ideas.
Eventually they chose Gloria Royer from Canterbury, Kent, whose business Dustbin Vintage selling handmade vintage clothing produced a lovely flash.
Gloria, who is 19, was overjoyed at the news.
“I create a unique spin on old vintage clothing, bringing “up- cycled” wears to the market at affordable prices.”
Gloria also gets a year’s free NMTF membership — as do the two highly commended traders, Jade Bryan and Michael Chipper.
Jade, from Barnsley, made many a mouth water with her excellent range of Jade’s Heavenly Buns — cupcakes,
cakes, confectionery and other sweet and savoury baked goods.
“I started at 14 when I was at school and have built it up with internet orders and servicing three cafes in Barnsley,” she said.
Michael Chipper, who lives in Bath, has a different take on up-cycling with his business Sloth Junk.
He takes broken electronic equipment such as computers, cameras and games consoles and turns them into clocks, phone cases, jewellery and accessories.
He said: “The great thing about my products is that they get young people excited about recycling and up-cycling, especially our gaming products as they are so recognisable and relatable.”
Joe Harrison thanked Manchester Market staff for all their help.
“Without their assistance and hard work this youth market would not happen, so we have to be enormously grateful to them,” he said.
