 Wakefield announces £4.8 million investment in

WAKEFIELD City Council has announced plans to invest £4.8 million in its markets to provide new stalls and improvements to its indoor markets.
Significantly, the council said that despite the decline in people shopping in markets, it recognised their vital role as an integral part of communities, as well as their social benefits and their importance as a source of fresh, local produce.
News of the investment has been welcomed by traders at the markets that will benefit which are

Castleford and Pontefract market halls, the towns’ outdoor markets, and the outdoor markets in Wakefield, Ossett, South Elmsall and Normanton.
The council said the improvement programme would enhance the quality, look and feel of the markets in order to attract new traders and customers and ensure they continue to play a key role in the district’s city and town centres. The work is due to start late this year and should be completed by next summer.
Plans for the outdoor markets include
reconfiguration, more attractive stalls and promotional banners.
The investment will also include the mod- ernisation of Castleford and Pontefract market halls and the reconfiguration of South Elmsall and Normanton markets to improve links to the high street.
The council said it would also provide financial support for traders who want to modernise their units. This would help with the overall visual improvement of the market and, alongside training and development opportunities, provided
   Stuart Holmes who runs Cryer and Stott, a cheese business in Pontefract’s indoor market, said as well as council investment there needed to be a major effort at a national level to help market traders and the high street including reductions in rent, rates and lower car parking charges
