 what they wanted.
“Everyone liked Bolton market which is a
very, traditional, higgledy-piggledy market. We want the character of a traditional market in a modern building with all new facilities,” he said.
In other words, the best of both worlds.
“The new permanent market will have an attractive, historical frontage which everyone in Warrington knows well — the Boots building,” Steve said.
“The other side will be an ultra modern entrance.”
Protecting the vibrancy of trade at the market has been a primary concern as the market is a
key anchor element in the Bridge Street Quarter project, so great care has also been taken with the design of the temporary market hall.
Steve said the council would be investing a significant amount in equipping and fitting out the temporary market.
The equipment would then be moved to the permanent market and the temporary market building would be taken over by a major retailer, he added.
The only downside of the project is that the existing market is likely to suffer until the move next year.
Hazel said: “It is quiet, but traders know that the market now has a very positive future and
our very loyal customers are continuing to shop here.”
Deputy Leader of Warrington Borough Council, Coun Mike Hannon said: “Warrington Market is and always has been at the heart of this town. Maintaining and building its energy, bustle and importance as a shopping destination is key to the regeneration of Warrington town centre. I would call on everyone — businesses, residents and everyone who works in the town to support our local traders and shop there. It’s got a fabulous mix of businesses. It really has got the lot. If you haven’t been for a while take another look because you are missing out.”
