£4.5m revamp for Bolton Market
BOLTON indoor market’s non- food traders are finding their sea legs trading in specially adapted shipping containers outside the market as work gets under way on the £4.5 million market revamp.
Thirty-two non-food traders joined the outdoor market in February to allow work to start on the redevelopment of the award- winning Lancashire market.
The food traders are staying put while the work is carried out, and their non-food colleagues will be able to return to the new-look market in November, according to Bolton’s market manager Jackie Casey.
The scheme involves re- furbishing the roof on the fish market; replacing the roof on the eastern hall which houses the
non-food section; introducing additional indoor food stalls and a seating area in the eastern hall; and repairing the roof over the western hall, which is home to the fresh fruit and vegetable traders.
Jackie Casey said: “The work is going well to date and there is a good feeling among the traders.”
She said the council had invested in 52 specially adapted shipping containers with roller shutters on the front, from which the non-food traders were now trading.
“It was a logistical nightmare, but we succeeded in getting the containers under an existing outdoor canopy, which has saved a lot of money,” she added.
The work is scheduled for completion by late 2014.
    Ray and Jan Nathan
ENFIELD Market stalwart Ray Nathan and his wife Jan are settling into a well-deserved retirement after Ray clocked up more than 40 years selling electrical goods on the market.
Ray started the market business in 1971 and was joined by his wife more than 20 years ago.
They decided to call it a day
because their costs were rising and standing out in the cold was taking an increasing toll.
Highlights for Ray included the friendliness of his fellow traders, the market staff and his customers, and a visit from the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in 2003 to mark the 700th anniversary of the market.
