Celebrating a century of selling crabs in Doncaster’s fish market

These days Phil’s two daughters, Hannah, 26, and Faye, 28, work alongside him on the stall and the business just gets better, he said.
“Part of the reason is that a number of other fish businesses have closed,” Phil said. But the fish market is still a thriving concern and the Morgan family are pleased to have been at the heart of it for the past hundred years.
      LANDLOCKED Doncaster in South Yorkshire may not be an obvious port of call for crab lovers – but one Yorkshire family has clocked up a hundred years of selling the crustaceans in the town’s famous fish market.
Charlie Morgan started the family business when he began boiling mussels and using a motorbike and sidecar to deliver them and other seafood locally.
He moved his business on to the market in 1919 and soon made his mark in the bustling fish market, specialising in crab which arrived by train from ports along the Yorkshire coast.
When other traders spotted how well Charlie was doing they also began selling crab, so Charlie began to sell other seafood and fish, but the business has notched up 100 years as The Crab Stall and the fourth generation is now working in the family concern.
Phil Morgan, Charlie’s grandson, started working for his father, also Charlie, when he was 14.
“It was a really busy stall and at one stage my dad employed 10 people and there were six of us picking crabs,” he said.
But new health and hygiene regulations put a stop to the family smoking its own fish and the stall was not quite so busy after that.
“It has always been a good family business though, and I took it over when my father retired 17 years ago. We still
