Anton Luczak is another long-term trader who has done well on Grantham market. Anton began his key and watch business on the market in 2006 and it grew well after a slow start. He has opened a shop nearby but continues with his busy market business.
“If I stopped, someone else would take my place and take away a third of my business, so it makes sense to run the shop and stand the market,” he said.
As well as the old school traders, new recruits have joined the market family, several of them having started businesses during lockdown.
Not all the traders abandoned Grantham market. Many stalwarts have been on the market for many years and have learned to take the rough with the smooth.
Neil Lamont is one of them. He is a cousin of the Wilcox family that run Wilcox Bakery. The business started off selling poultry and eggs on Grantham mar- ket 40 years ago. They introduced home- made cakes and the new offer took off. Now Wilcox Bakery stands a dozen markets and supplies shops including Spar.
“We are very busy on this market and others. The downside is that you never get a week off,” Neil said.

When the first lockdown happened, ASDA ran out of eggs and Neil said he sold 13 big boxes. Business has increased ever since, he says.
Daniel Jelley, who set up Jelleyfish 16 years ago, also says trade has been good before and during the pandemic.
Daniel worked for 10 years on Grimsby fish docks when it was a booming fish processing port and starting a market business when the industry declined was a natural choice.
“This market has always been good to us and we have a lot of very loyal customers here,” he said.

Marina Bolton and her husband Jeff have made a good start selling their natural dog products on the market after discovering the benefits of their products when one of their three dogs became ill
