  Introduction
THE NMTF — the only organisation to represent market and street traders, events retailers and mobile caterers throughout the UK — is pleased to provide you with this free comprehensive guide to retail market trading in the UK.
Spring Into Markets has been born out of the crisis we have all been through in 2020, and is meant as practical encouragement to think about trading on markets as a living.
For a number of years the NMTF has nurtured many young traders from starting on markets to growing their businesses.
The latest project is the Young Traders Market for 16 to 30yearolds who have an idea to sell. Culminating in a national final it has worked extremely well — but we see no reason why older people cannot spread their wings by springing into markets.
It may be something that you haven’t previously thought about, but if you’re reading this there must be at least a glimmer of interest.
It’s painful, but it has to be acknowledged that many thousands of people will have lost their jobs because of the COVID19 pandemic.
But there will be redundancy payments and so on out there — and market trading is a lean way to set up a business. It is possible to get financial support and we’ll look at that later.
For now let’s take a brief look at the attractions of becoming a market trader.
The opportunity to build your business — as a startup it may be difficult to secure funding, especially to afford a lease for a shop. With cheaper rent and possible rent incentives for new traders (depending on market), market trading gives you the opportunity to start small and grow.
Staying flexible — you don’t have to stay at one particular market, If you want you can trade on a number of markets on any number of days. If you have a niche product, there may be specific markets that will suit your business. Get your ear to the ground and visit your local markets!
